The non-catalytic aqueous reactions of 1,10-phenanthroline with ammonium hexachloroiridate(III)☆

Reflux of acidified aqueous solutions of 1,10-phenanthroline(L) and (NH4)3IrCl6 for 10 min to 2 hr gives variable products containing mixtures of the species [IrLCl4]−and [IrL(OH)Cl3]−. After 2 weeks of reflux the compound [IrL2Cl2]Cl·2H2O and the corresponding adduct [IrL2Cl2] NO3·2H2O·HNO3 have been isolated. The presence of a cis cation in these latter two products is suggested by recent findings of others and is supported by i.r. spectra.
