Electrochemical degradation of 17-α-methyltestosterone (MT) using a commercial Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA®) was studied in order to determine the best electrolysis conditions of electrolyte type (Na2SO4, NaClO4), pH (3,0 and 7,0) and current density (15, 30 and 45 mAcm−2). The depletion of MT absorbance, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and total current efficiency (TCE) were superior in the presence of Na2SO4 and acidic medium, as also the observed first order kinetic constants. This experimental condition showed 100% of absorbance (λmax= 245nm) removal after 40 min and 100% of COD removal after 120 min, using 45 mA cm-2 as current density. Energy consumption and cost were estimated in order to verify the applicability of the process. Since 45 mA cm-2 represented the highest power consumption, an environmental friendly alternative was presented when the samples were analyzed after 24 h resting. The COD continues to be reduced after the end of the reactions, which implicate in higher degradation using lower current density. COD removals obtained were 95 and 99% by using 15 mA cm-2 and 30 mA cm-2, respectively, in the samples after resting. Regarding germination and growth assays, the experiments conducted with Na2SO4 presented lower toxicity.
