The i.r. and Raman spectra (3500-100 cm−1) of trichloro-2,4,6(methylthio)-5 pyrimidine and of tetrachloro and tetrabromopyrimidine have been measured. The coupling of the vibrations νC-X (X = substituent) with the nuclear vibrations have been studied and the characteristics of these couplings have been determined. The results supplement early work on pyrimidines with fewer substituents and the arrangements of the nuclear vibrations have been reconsidered.
