Aminoglutethimide is an inhibitor of steroid synthesis in the adrenal cortex, where it inhibits several cytochrome P450-mediated steps, including the synthesis of pregnenolone from cholesterol. It also inhibits the cytochrome P450 aromatase enzyme responsible for the conversion of androgens to estrogens. It is used is used for the treatment of Cushing's syndrome and metastatic carcinoma of the breast in post-menopausal or ovariectomized women.
