  • Thermal degradation of Methacrylonitrile (cas 126-98-7) polymers and copolymers. 2. Copolymers of Methacrylonitrile (cas 126-98-7) and styrene

The thermal degradation of random copolymers of Methacrylonitrile (cas 126-98-7) and styrene, prepared by free radical polymerisation using azoisobutyronitrile as initiator, has been studied using TG, DTA and TVA. Products obtained in the TVA experiments have been separated and characterised. These copolymers do not undergo the colouration reaction found to occur at quite low temperatures in some methacrylonitrile polymers and copolymers. The degradation products are mainly those found from the decomposition of the respective homopolymers, with methacrylonitrile and styrene monomers predominating, but a somewhat greater proportion of cold ring (tar/wax) products observed than might be predicted. These are short chain fragments containing some products which have both types of repeat unit. Some minor volatile products have been identified which can only arise from parts of the chain with adjoining, dissimilar units. A mechanism of degradation for these copolymers is presented.
