The oxidative coupling of phenols or phenol ethers belongs to the category of those venerable organic reactions that continue to sustain the interest of chemists even after more than a century and a half of relentless investigations. Aside from its use as a convenient means to rapidly access useful functionalized biaryl and diaryl ether motifs, and key transformation in the biosynthetic elaboration of numerous natural products, it is not surprising that this class of oxidation reactions occupies a place of choice in the organic chemist toolbox. This chapter highlights a selection of research reports published on this topic over the past 20 years with the aim of providing the reader with comprehensive information on the mechanistic options available to phenols and phenol ethers during oxidative coupling processes, on the various types of reagents and systems used to promote and control such transformations, and on their utility for the synthesis of diverse chemicals such as natural products, pharmaceuticals, polymers and materials, and catalysts.
