Mammary dysplasia: Endocrine parameters and tocopherol therapy

The effect of alpha tocopherol supplementation on serum hormones was studies in women with clinically confirmed mammary dysplasia and age-matched controls. Serum samples collected at monthly intervals on the 21st day of the menstrual cycle for a period of four months were analyzed for estradiol, progesterone, testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone by radioimmunoassay. Eighty-five percent of the patients showed objective and subjective remission from the disease. Alpha tocopherol supplementation reduced the serum dehydroepiandrosterone levels of patients without affecting the concentrations of other hormones.
