A simple, convenient and general method has been developed for the synthesis of α-aminonitriles by a one-pot three component condensation of aldehydes, amines and trimethyl silyl cyanide in acetonitrile in the presence of a catalytic amount of La(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O or GdCl 3 ·6H 2 O.
