Lanthanum of about 99·8 per cent purity was obtained from DIDYMIUM CHLORIDE (cas 11098-90-1) using two batch multistage countercurrent extraction cascades with 1 M D2EHPA as solvent. In the first cascade the La was concentrated in the raffinate, and in the second cascade the La was purified. The over-all recovery of La was 60 per cent. Batch tests showed that the solvent could be reused repeatedly with no loss in extracting power.
