Methanesulfonic acid/phosphorus oxychloride (MAPO) was found to be a new effecient reagent in the Fries rearrangement of phenolic esters. Fries rearrangement of phenolic esters in the presence of MAPO, gave acylaryl methane sulfonates as major products.
