Two transient species have been detected in the photoenolization of 2-methylbenzophenone by time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy. The shorter-lived species characterized by bands at 1522 and 1275 cm−1 is attributed to the cis dienol based on the vibrational assignments of these bands, the lifetime of 8 μs and the lack of oxygen quenching. The longer-lived species exhibiting the band at 1541 cm−1 is most probably the trans dienol. On the basis of 13C and deuterium substitutions, the bands at 1522 and 1275 cm−1 can be assigned respectively to a CC stretch and a CH in-plane bend of the ortho-quinoidal ring of the cis dienol. The band at 1541 cm−1 may be assigned to the CCOH stretch of the trans dienol. For 2-benzylbenzophenone, only one transient species exhibiting bands at 1521, 1311 and 1285 cm−1 has been detected. This transient species is attributable to the cis dienol because of its 3 μs lifetime and spectral similarity to the cis dienol of 2-methylbenzophenone.
