CODEN: USXXAM. CLASS: IC: C08G073-02. NCL: 260002000R. APPLICATION: US 76-693589 7 Jun 1976. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 36 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Section cross-reference(s): 63 Partially-crosslinked ionene polymers, useful as bile acid sequestrants, were prepd. by crosslinking poly-[(methylimino)trimethylene] (I) with a dihalopropane and completing quaternization with an alkylhalide. Thus, 500 mg I and 140 mg 1,3-dibromopropane [109-64-8] in 10 mL DMF were heated 3 days at 75° to give partially quaternized, ~20% crosslinked I. MeBr [74-83-9] (3.3 g) in 10 mL DMF was added, and the mixt. was heated 24 h at 50° to give completely quaternized, partially crosslinked poly[(dimethylammonio)trimethylene bromide].

Percec, Virgil; Shaffer, Timothy D.; Nava, Hildeberto (Dep. Macromol. Sci., Case West. Reserve Univ., Cleveland, OH 44106, USA). J. Polym. Sci., Polym. Lett. Ed., 22(12), 637-47 (English) 1984. CODEN: JPYBAN. ISSN: 0360-6384. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 36 Phase-transfer-catalyzed polyetherification of the mesogenic 4,4'-dihydroxy-a-methylstilbene (I) [72108-22-6] with a,w-dibromoalkanes at 70° in o-dichlorobenzene-50% aq. NaOH soln. in the presence of (Bu4N)HSO4 [32503-27-8] catalyst gave polyethers exhibiting liq.-cryst. properties. According to results of both DSC and optical polarizing microscopy, the polyethers contg. 3-6 CH2 groups exhibit on heating and cooling both smectic and nematic textures, while those with 7 and 8 CH2 groups exhibit only smectic structures. The I-CH2Br2 copolymer [94220-23-2] melt decompd. at 245°, and no polymer was obtained by reacting I with 1,2-dibromoethane. The NMR study of polymers contg. 3, 5, and 7 CH2 units showed that the last 2 polymers contained only bromoalkane chain ends, whereas the 1,3-dibromopropane [109-64-8]-based polymer [94220-24-3] contained both bromopropane and allyl ether chain ends, the ratio of which depended on the polymn. conditions. The mechanism of the phase-transfer-catalyzed etherification of I with dihaloalkanes is discussed.
