DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) Dental materials for repairing, protecting, and improving the appearance of damaged teeth comprise a polymerizable liq. org. binder, a polymn. initiator, and a powd. filler, such as .alpha.-quartz [14808-60-7], for which 70-95% of the particles have 0.7-25 .mu. diam. and 5-30% have 0.2-0.7 .mu. diam. The materials have good compressive strength, the desired transparency, and are usually formulated as 2-part pastes compns., 1 contg. the polymn. catalyst and the other contg. an activator. For example, .alpha.-quartz was heated at 1000.degree., quenched in H2O, dried, and ground to a powder with 100% of the particles <21 .mu. diam. and 75% with diam. <5.4 .mu.. The powd. quartz was mixed with 4% colloidal SiO2 thickener and then with 8% (based on quartz + SiO2) of a 50% .gamma.-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane [2530-85-0] soln. in toluene. The mixt. was sprayed into thin layers, dried and cooled. One part of a 2-part dental formulation comprised a paste of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate [109-16-0] 48.8, N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-p-toluidine 2.5, bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate [1565-94-2] 46.5, and the powd. filler 525 g. The 2nd paste contained Bz2O2 1.1, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate 48.7, bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate 49.3, the powd. filler 525 g, and a small amt. of substituted phenol polymn. inhibitor. Equal vols. of the 2 pastes were mixed for 20 s, and hardened in 2 min to form a compn. with 3867 kg/cm2 compressive strength after 24 h immersion in H2O at 37.degree..

DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) Composites for dental use consist of a mixt. of spherical inorg. oxides with different diams. and polymerizable vinyl monomers. The composites had a high surface hardness, more resistant to abrasion and had a high bonding strength. As an example, a mixt. contg. tetraethyl silicate [78-10-4] and MeOH was gradually added to a mixt. contg. MeOH and NH4OH. The resultant mixt. was evapd., heated at 1000° and pulverized to form silica particles with diam. of 0.18-0.24 mm. The particles were treated with g-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane and mixed with bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate [1565-94-2] and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate [109-16-0] to produce a paste composite. The composite was mixed with N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (paste A) or with Bz2O2 (paste B). An equal amt. of paste A and paste B were mixed at room temp. for 3 s. The compressive strength was 4100 kg/cm2, bonding strength with 760 kg/cm2 and the surface hardness was 70.0.Except for chemicals metioned above, 3524-68-3 and 78-10-4 are also used. .
