Description
DEGN, also known as Diglycidyl Ether of Bisphenol A (DGEBA), is a liquid explosive that is extremely sensitive and requires proper desensitization with a phlegmatizer to ensure safety. It is slightly soluble in alcohol and soluble in ether, with a specific gravity of 1.38. DEGN is slightly toxic if ingested and poses a primary hazard of an instantaneous explosion under prolonged exposure to heat, fire, or sudden shock, with the blast effect being the main concern rather than flying projectiles or fragments.
Uses
Used in Aerospace Industry:
DEGN is used as a rocket propellant for its high energy density and performance characteristics, making it suitable for various aerospace applications. Its sensitivity to heat and shock, however, requires careful handling and desensitization to ensure safety during use.
Used in Chemical Industry:
In the chemical industry, DEGN can be used as a reactive monomer or intermediate in the synthesis of various polymers and resins. Its reactivity and versatility make it a valuable component in the development of new materials with specific properties and applications.
Air & Water Reactions
Slightly soluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
Nitroorganics, such as DEGN, range from slight to strong oxidizing agents. If mixed with reducing agents, including hydrides, sulfides and nitrides, they may begin a vigorous reaction that culminates in a detonation. Nitroalkanes are milder oxidizing agents, but still react violently with reducing agents at higher temperature and pressures. Nitroalkanes react with inorganic bases to form explosive salts. The presence of metal oxides increases the thermal sensitivity of nitroalkanes. Nitroalkanes with more than one nitro group are generally explosive.
Health Hazard
Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.
Fire Hazard
MAY EXPLODE AND THROW FRAGMENTS 1600 meters (1 MILE) OR MORE IF FIRE REACHES CARGO.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 693-21-0 includes 6 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 3 digits, 6,9 and 3 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 2 and 1 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 693-21:
(5*6)+(4*9)+(3*3)+(2*2)+(1*1)=80
80 % 10 = 0
So 693-21-0 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

Synthesis of nitric acid esters from alcohols in a dinitrogen pentoxide/carbon dioxide liquid system
Kuchurov, Ilya V.,Fomenkov, Igor V.,Zlotin, Sergei G.,Tartakovsky, Vladimir A.
experimental part, p. 67 - 69 (2012/07/02)
Organic nitric acid esters have been prepared in 89-98% yield by the nitration of the corresponding alcohols and polyols with N2O5 in liquid CO2.
