Organochlorine pesticides
Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are chemical compounds widely used for insect and pest control in agricultural, residential, and industrial settings. These pesticides work by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which is essential for the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the nervous system of insects and other pests. By blocking AChE activity, organophosphorus pesticides disrupt nerve signal transmission, leading to paralysis and ultimately death in insects. OPs are effective against a broad spectrum of pests, including insects, mites, and nematodes. They are valued for their potency and relatively low persistence in the environment compared to older pesticide classes like organochlorines.
