Sulfonates / Sulfinates salts
Sulfonates and sulfinates are types of salts that contain a sulfonate or sulfinic acid functional group, respectively. Sulfonates have the general structure RSO3- where R is an organic group attached to the sulfonate group, while sulfinates have the general structure RSO2- where R is similarly an organic group attached to the sulfinic acid group. These compounds are characterized by their stability and solubility in water, making them useful as surfactants, detergents, and catalysts in various industrial applications. Sulfonates, in particular, are important in biochemistry and pharmaceuticals, where they can act as protecting groups for alcohols and amines in organic synthesis. Sulfinates, on the other hand, are known for their role as intermediates in the synthesis of sulfoxides and sulfones, which have applications in medicine and materials science.
