Cyanate ester / isocyanate
Cyanate esters and isocyanates are distinct classes of organic compounds with different chemical structures and properties. Cyanate esters are characterized by the presence of an -OCN functional group bonded to an aromatic or aliphatic structure, where the carbon is also bonded to an oxygen atom. These compounds are known for their ability to polymerize into thermosetting resins, making them valuable in high-temperature applications such as aerospace composites and electronic materials. Isocyanates, on the other hand, feature an -NCO functional group, where the nitrogen is bonded to a carbon atom that is part of an aromatic or aliphatic structure. Isocyanates are highly reactive compounds used primarily in the production of polyurethanes, where they react with polyols to form polyurethane polymers. They are also employed in coatings, adhesives, and sealants due to their rapid curing properties and ability to form durable bonds.
