Fatty acid methyl ester

A fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) is a chemical compound derived from the transesterification of fats or oils with methanol. This reaction breaks down the triglycerides present in fats and oils into glycerol and fatty acid methyl esters. FAMEs are commonly used as biodiesel fuels due to their similarity to conventional diesel fuel in terms of combustion properties and compatibility with existing engines and infrastructure. They are renewable, biodegradable, and less toxic than traditional petroleum-derived fuels. In addition to their use as biofuels, FAMEs are also utilized in various industrial applications, including lubricants, solvents, and surfactants.
