Watermelons can not only supplement water and some nutrients like protein, inorganic salt and vitamins for expectant mothers, but also stimulate the intestinal peristalsis and increase the secretion of breast milk. If pregnant women eat watermelons during the pregnancy, the nutrients for both expectant mothers and the fetuses can be supplemented. In addition, watermelons can help pregnant women eliminate the edema and decrease the blood pressure at the last stage of pregnancy.

    Although watermelons are rather beneficial to the health of expectant mothers, they can not be eaten excessively. The intake amount of watermelons should be less than 200 grams each day. The excessive intake of watermelons can increase the amount of sugar inside the body, which can further cause the gestational diabetes. The gestational diabetes is an important reason of premature delivery and abortion. Therefore, pregnant women should not eat too many watermelons. In addition, expectant mothers with nephropathy or diabetes should especially eat watermelons moderately, or the symptoms of the diseases can be worsened. It is better for them to eat watermelons under the guidance of the doctors so as to maintain the health of the fetuses.

    Watermelons can supplement essential nutrients for women, such as protein and vitamin A. However, when pregnant women eat watermelons, they should choose the fresh and ripe ones. The frozen watermelons in the refrigerators should not be eaten, as the low temperature can shrink the uterus and even cause premature delivery. In addition, watermelons should be eaten after the dinner so as to avoid causing inappetence.
