A remarkable rate enhancement of internucleotidic bond formation in DNA synthesis has been achieved by use of 3-(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-4',4''-dimethoxytrityl as a new 5'-hydroxyl protecting group which has a potential catalytic site for condensation.
