p,p'-Dinitrobenzhydryl Ethers, Acid and Base Stable Protecting Groups, Which Are Readily Removable in the Presence of Benzyl and Monomethoxytrityl Functions

BF3-catalyzed reaction of alcohols with bis(p-nitrophenyl)diazomethane gave the corresponding DNB ethers, from which blocking groups were selectively removed by catalytic hydrogenation using platinium or nickel boride or by chemical reduction, followed by mild acid hydrolysis (e.g., pH 4).
