The reaction of equimolecular amounts of N'-(3-imino-1-alkenyl)hydrazones and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate affords functionalized 2(1H)-pyridinones.Treatment of these compounds with mineral acid or base yields the new 1,7-dioxo-1,2,6,7-tetrahydropyrido<3,4-d>pyridazines.
