A new method for the synthesis of methyl 2,3-dideoxy-2-benzoylamido-3-acetoxymethyl-5,6-O-isopropylidene-α-D-mannofuranoside and other analogues from 2,3-O-isopropylidene-D-glyceraldehyde via a commom β-lactam intermediate is described.
