Addition of alkyllithiums to (S)-2-(2-hydroxypropylidene)-1,3-dithiane and reduction of (S)-2-(2-hydroxy-1-alkylpropylidene)-1,3-dithianes with lithium aluminium hydride gave optically active syn- and anti-2-(2-hydroxy-1-alkylpropyl)-1,3-dithianes with high diastereoselectivity, respectively.
