thioacetate 16 (150 mg, 0.35 mmol) and triflate 9 (264 mg,
0.52 mmol) gave, after purification by flash chromatography (pent-
ane/EtOAc, 4:1), the thioether 27 (150 mg, 60%) as a colourless
oil. [α]2D3 = –118 (c = 1.0, in CHCl3). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3):
δ = 7.55–7.05 (m, 20 H, Ar-H), 5.57, 5.54 (2 s, 2 H, 2 PhCH), 4.96,

Bis(methyl 2-O-benzyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-3-deoxy-β-D-allopyranos-
id-3-yl)sulfane (30): According to general procedure II, triflate 10
(500 mg, 1.0 mmol), sodium sulfide (475 mg, 2.0 mmol), molecular
sieves (500 mg) and MeCN (6 mL) gave, after purification by flash
chromatography (pentane/EtOAc, 3:1, 1% Et3N), the thioether 30
(331 mg, 90%) as a colourless oil. [α]2D1 = –112 (c = 1.0, in CHCl3).
1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ = 7.52–7.12 (m, 20 H, Ar-H), 5.57

triflate 11 (141 mg, 0.28 mmol), sodium sulfide (210 mg,
0.88 mmol), molecular sieves (300 mg) and MeCN (3 mL) gave, af-
ter purification by flash chromatography (pentane/EtOAc, 10:1 Ǟ
7:1 Ǟ 5:1, 1% Et3N), the thioether 31 (66 mg, 64%) as a colourless
oil. [α]2D2 = +26.1 (c = 1.0, in CHCl3); δH (500 MHz, CDCl3): δ =
7.53–7.51 (m, 4 H, Ar-H), 7.42–7.28 (m, 16 H, Ar-H), 5.65 (s, 2 H,
PhCH), 5.04 (d, J1,2 = 1.0 Hz, 2 H, H-1), 4.92, 4.67 (2 d, J =
