Starting from GeCl4, the (hydroxymethyl)diorganylgermanes (CH3)2Ge(H)CH2OH and (C6H52Ge(H)CH2OH were prepared by a four-step synthesis in total yields of 15 and 32%, respectively (GeCl4 → Cl3GeCH2Cl → R2Ge(Cl)CH2Cl → R2Ge(OAc)CH2OAc → R2Ge(H)CH2OH; R CH3 or C6H5). The chemical reactivity of (CH3)2Ge(H)CH2OH and (C6H52Ge(H)CH2OH was found to be determined by their GeH and OH bonds.
