Phenyl-2 naphthalenes and unsymmetrical 2,2'-binaphtyl derivatives, substituted on positions adjacent to the ring linkage are obtained by a one pot sequence: o-bromophenylketone coupling with aryl ketone derived enolates under S_RN1 conditions followed by an intramolecular aldol reaction.Steric hindrance of the nucleophilic site is the main yield limiting factor of the first reaction and therefore of the overall yield of the title biaryls.
