A first total synthesis of Forssman antigen, GalNAcα1→3GalNAcβ1→3Galα1→4Galβ1→4Glcβ1-1Cer, was achieved in a stereoselective manner by using a glycopentaosyl fluoride as a key glycosyl donor for the crucial coupling with a ceramide equivalent.
