Addition of sulphur stabilised carbanions to a chiral non-racemic butenolide followed by reaction with an aromatic aldehyde affords a short synthesis of homochiral dibenzylbutyrolactone derivatives.Desulphurisation of the first formed adducts proceeds in almost quantitative yield to afford the parent lignan.
