The protection of the heterocyclic groups of nucleosides by the 2,2,2-trichloro-t-butoxycarbonyl group (TCBOC) is described.This N-protecting group is sufficiently stable against the conditions used in oliginucleotide synthesis, and is selectively removed by cobalt(I) phthalocyanine at 0 deg C-20 deg C in neutral solution.
