A stereospecific route to 4-fluoroglutamic acids from pyroglutamic acid has been devised and variable temperature ¹H-nmr spectroscopic studies have explained apparent inconsistencies in the stereochemical outcome of steps in a synthesis of 4-fluoroglutamic acids from hydroxyprolines.
