In this article - which we dedicate to the lifework of Professor Teruaki Mukaiyama - a new general 5,6-dihydro-2H-1,3-oxazine synthesis is described. 3-Hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropionaldehyde is condensed with a second oxo component and ammonia to the title compound in several examples.In the case of citronellal diastereoselectivity is observed.
