Ethyl 5-(1,4-cyclohexadien-3,6-dione-1-yl)-3,5-dihydroxypentanoate (9) has been synthesized by using the reaction of 2,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde(4) with β-ketoester dianions as the key step.
