Alkylation of the substrates 8-12 with (Z)-3-bromo-1-iodopropene (5), followed by n-BuLi-mediated cyclization of the resultant products 15-19, provides the tertiary allylic alcohols 22-26, which, upon oxidation with a Cr(VI) reagent, afford the cyclopentenones 29-33.The α-methylcyclopentenones 34 and 35 are similarly derived from the keto esters 13 and 14.
