η2-Phosphinocarbene complexes of tungsten containing a trimethyl-phosphine ligand show an amphiphilic behavior. With the Lewis acid SMe+ an electrophilic attack occurs at the metal-carbon double bond to give 1-tungsta-2-phospha-4-thiabicyclo<1.1.0>butane complexes. On the contrary the Lewis base, PMe3, adds at the carbene carbon atom to yield a cationic trimethylphosphoraneylidene complex. However, treatment of dicarbonyl(η5-cyclopentadienyl)<η2-(diphenylphosphino)methylcarbene>-tungsten-tetraphenylborate with the less nucleophilic triethylamine causes deprotonation at the methyl group providing dicarbonyl(η5-cyclopentadienyl)-η2-diphenylphosphinovinyltungsten.Keywords: Tungsten; Amphiphilic carbene complexes; Phosphino carbene complexes
