Facile reductive excision of sulfur from a {Pt2S2} core in [Pt2(PPh3)4(μ-S)2] to a {Pt2S} triangle by carbon monoxide

A synthetic path is established in which [Pt₂(CO)_x(PPh₃)_4-x(μ-S)] (x = 0-2) can be prepared from [Pt₂(PPh₃)₄(μ-S)₂] under CO at low pressure whereby reductive desulfurization of a {Pt₂¹¹S₂} core gives way to a Pt-Pt bonded {Pt₂¹S} triangle with extrusion of COS gas.
