A bulky tris(trisilyl) methyl ligand incorporating a donor sulfur atom: Some (Me3Si)2(PhSMe2Si)CSnMe2X compounds

Reaction of (Me₃Si)₂(PhSMe₂Si)CCl with BuLi at low temperature gave the organolithium reagent (Me₃Si)₂(PhSMe₂Si)CLi, which was treated with Me₃SnCl to give (Me₃Si)₂(PhSMe₂Si)CSnMe₃. Reaction of the latter with a one or two molar proportion of iodine gave the monoiodide (Me₃Si)₂(PhSMe₂Si)CSnMe₂I and the diiodide (Me₃Si)₂(IMe₂Si)CSnMe₂I respectively. The corresponding reaction with even a one molar proportion of bromine gave mainly the dibromide (Me₃Si)₂(BrMe₂Si)CSnMe₂Br. Treatment of the monoiodide with an excess of AgCN in CDCl₃ gave (Me₃Si)₂(PhSMe₂Si)CSnMe₂CN, but similar treatment with AgBF₄ gave mainly the difluoride (Me₃Si)₂(FMe₂Si)CSnMe₂F. Hydrolysis of the diiodide gave the mixed diol (Me₃Si)₂(HOMe₂Si)CSnMe₂OH.
