Under UV irradiation tricarbonyl(η⁶-8,8-dimethylheptafulvene)chromium(0) (I) reacts with 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene (II) in an unusual addition-substitution manner.A dicarbonylchromium(0) complex with a η^3:5-butenylenecycloheptadienyl chelating ligand (III) is formed in good yield.Treatment of III with CO at 273 K and atmospheric pressure yields the corresponding substituted tricarbonyl(η⁶-bicyclo<4.4.1>undeca-2,4,8-triene)chromium(0) complex (IV), which is the formal <4+6>-cycloadduct of I and II.The structures of III and IV are elucidated by IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy.
