to which intentions predict actual helping behaviours.
Furthermore, there is a need to evaluate the long-term effec-
tiveness of sustained community gatekeeper training in Aborigi-
nal communities. For example, the evaluation process should
assess how many participants identified and tried to facilitate help
seeking for someone who was at risk of suicide. Ideally, such
evaluation should include whether there are increases in referral
rates and engagement with mental health services or other help-
ing resources (e.g. elders, community members,Aboriginal Medi-
cal Services).

The project was funded from the Commonwealth Funding for
Rural Youth counselling under the National Youth Suicide Pre-
vention Strategy. The project could not have been undertaken
without the advice, support and endorsement of the Shoalhaven
Aboriginal Mental Health Advisory Group, the Aboriginal Medi-
cal Service, local Aboriginal organisations, and members of the
participating communities of Jerringa, Wreck Bay, and Dharawal.
Appreciation is also extended to the Aboriginal and non-
Aboriginal health workers at the Nowra Community Health
Centre with special thanks to Iris McLeod, coordinator of
Aboriginal Health. The contribution of the project team members
is acknowledged, in particular Dawn de Ramirez, Kevin Boota
and Joanne Connolly. Dawn de Ramirez, the Shoalhaven
Aboriginal suicide prevention/education officer, has endorsed this
report as an accurate representation of the activities of the project,
and the Shoalhaven Aboriginal Mental Health Advisory Group
supports the publication of this information.
