253.7 nm irradiation of meso-3 and DL-3 in decane or isooctane yielded meso-4 and DL-4 respectively in contrast to the thermolysis reaction of 3. p-Chloro-toluene, p-chloro-t-butylbenzene and p-chloro-fluorobenzene are similarly reduced in 70-90 percent yield.
