A 3a,6-dihydroindole was prepared by the Diels-Alder addition of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to dimethyl maleate. Subsequent reaction with bromine gave a 2,3-dibromoindoline which is different from that obtained from the corresponding 3a,7a-dihydroindole.
