The Coltet mesophase showing spontaneous perfect
homeotropic alignment. As can be seen from Fig. 3,
each of the present Pc derivatives 5a, 5b and 5c shows
spontaneous monodomain homeotropic alignment
without defects and domain boundaries for the Coltet
mesophase between two non-surface-treated glass plates
(1.8 cm × 1.8 cm), as well as the previous Pc derivatives
1 [11]. The homeotropic alignment was confirmed to
show complete darkness with crossed polarizers without
spontaneous fluidity. Generally, discotic liquid crystals
show many defects and domain boundaries even in the
homeotropic alignment. On the other hand, the present
discotic liquid crystals, 5a, 5b and 5c, show perfect
monodomain homeotropic alignment without defects and
domain boundaries.
CONCLUSION
We have synthesized a novel series of asymmetrical
phthalocyanine derivatives, 2-(12-hydroxydodecyloxy)-
3-methoxy-9,10,16,17,23,24-hexakis(3,4-di-n-
alkoxyphenoxy)phthalocyaninatocopper(II)(abbreviated
as Cn(OC12OH)PcCu: n = 10, 12, 14: 5a, 5b and 5c),
and investigated their columnar mesomorphism and
homeotropic alignment property. These asymmetrical
Pc derivatives could be easily isolated from the mixture
Pc products by their polarity difference. It was revealed
that each of the symmetrical Pc derivatives has plural
mesophases, and that the tetragonal columnar (Coltet)
mesophase shows perfect homeotropic alignment
without any defects and polydomain boundaries between
two non-surface-treated glass plates. Thus, the perfect
homeotropic alignment could be achieved for the present
