Quantitative detritylation of mono- and di-saccharide derivatives of diverse structure was achieved with FeCl₃ · 6H₂O in CH₂Cl₂ at room temperature. Benzyl, isopropylidene, isopropylthio, allyl, acetyl, and benzoyl O-protecting groups were not effected under the designated conditions.
