Irradiations of esters of the exo- and endo-6,7-benzobicyclo<3.2.1>octa-3,6-dien-2-ols lead only to the di-?-methane rearrangement products, even under conditions where the 3-chloro derivatives lead to photosolvolysis and Wagner-Meerwein reaction products.A tentative rationalization of the chlorine-atom effect is offered.
