One diastereomer is formed in large excess (98-76percent diastereomeric excess) on addition of the 2-(1-dimethylaminoethyl)phenyl group, R*, to 3-penten-2-one, 2-cyclohexenone, 4-phenyl-3-buten-2-one, and 5-phenyl-2,2-dimethyl-4-penten-3-one.
