3-Aroylanthra<1,9-cd>isoxazol-6-ones (II) are formed when 1-azido-2-aroylanthraquinones are refluxed in o-dichlorobenzene; this may constitute evidence that reactions of this type proceed via a "concerted" mechanism.Thermolysis of these and other substances in nitrobenzene leads to 7,8-phthaloylacridones, the structures of which were confirmed by alternative synthesis.
