J modulation of (13)C spin-echo signals is used to develop a strategy for the analysis of deuterated carbon compounds, with the aim to distinguish (13)C NMR signals of quaternary carbons, CH, CH2, CH3, CHD, CH2D, CHD2, CD, CD2, and CD3 groups.Three different experimental approaches are discussed: (1) spin-echo modulation by 1J<(13)C,(1)H><(1)H-SEFT> without (2)H decoupling as the simplest method available; (2) spin-echo modulation by either 1J<(13)C,(1)H> or 1J<(13)C,(2)H> with simultaneous (1)H and (2)H decoupling a pulse sequence that provides the most general approach to the analysis of labeled carbon sites in organic molecules.
