The alkaloidal toxin, (-)-swainsonine: (1S,2R,8R,8aR)-1,2,8-trihydroxyoctahydroindolizine has been synthesized stereoselectively starting from methyl 3-acetamido-2,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-3-deoxy-α-D-mannopyranoside in a 15 steps rection.
