Phototransformation of Kebuzon in solution

The photolysis of Kebuzon (1) in methanol leads to azobenzene (2), methoxy-(3-oxobutyl)malonic dianilide (3), (3,3-dimethoxybutyl)-methoxymalonic dianilide (4), 2,5-dioxocaproic anilide (5), 5,5-dimethoxy-2-oxocaproic anilide (6) and aniline. When the irradiation of 1-Na is carried out in water, (3-oxobutyl)tartronic dianilide (7) precipitates. The degradation mechanism is discussed.
