The benzisoquinolines 2a and 2b were prepared by two ways from the tetrasubstituted naphthalene 1a.A second-order Beckmann rearrangement is described which leads to the salt 5, which is demetylated.A three-step procedure leads from 1a to the homologous naphth<1,2-d>azepine 9.
